View Full Version : How to get along with the others?

Well, I'm not sure if that's a tutorial. It's more kind of a guide. I hope this is the right section anyway.
What I'm about to say it's nothing new for most of you. And I don't want to preach or tell anyone what to do. I'll just try to help you to see some things from a different angle.

The reason I'm posting this are some of the members. As I see a quarrel between you, I feel offended. I tought that the "leets" are supposed to know, that arguing via the Internet is useless. And even if you win, it's the same thing you would get a medal on Special Olympics - you win, but you're still a retard(I don't know who said that, but it's genious).

And what do you do, when someone flames you for no (apparent) reason?
One chance is, that you don't respond. I sometimes stick to this simple rule: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all."
The other chance is, to ask politely (if you don't understand), why were you just flamed?

But don't hit back. Why? Well, first of all, you'll go offtopic and the thread will change into flame fest. That's not good, isn't it? Then, undoubtly you'll lose you respect among the others(well, if you had any).

There is something I'd like to say to the ...

a) Senoir Members:
I know, how easy is it to pick on a helpless little newb. He's new, noone will stand up for him. And what is he going to do? Talk with you and use bad grammar until you give up? Or hit you with a valid argument while he can barely spell?

My advice is not to flame or argue with newbies. Why?
Not much of the new guys stick around long. So there's no sense in arguing with them and wasting the energy. But some of them stay anyway. And one day they'll grow up in Internet gangstas and remember you, how you flamed them in their noobish days. I mean, we all were n00bs at one point, admit it.

And when you criticise someone's art or anim .... meh, I'm not going to say anything about that, read Areks's tutorial about construcive criticism.

Oh, and one more thing. Do you know, why do newbs spell so bad? Most of them have never been to a forum or they come from a chat-room. And you know, how the chat-rooms are. More interactive than the forums. And like on Habbo there is no much space for long texts, so they shorten their words. And some of them just can't speak English well.
If you want them to improve their spelling, don't say:"You phail @ life." If that'll bring them to realise that spelling is important, then I'll transform myself into a horse and eat grass until the rest of my life.
If you want to help help him, PM him and ask for the MSN contact or anything. And talk with him. Politely, without using bad words. If I recall correctly FrAnKeH helped someone that way to spell better.

And anywhere IRL or via the Internet ... if you want something, everything can be done with kindness and a natural smile. Wow, I sound like I'm selling canned politeness. But it's true. I won't start listing my own experiences ... but has anyone heard a story about the sun and the wind?

Well, once upon a time there were the sun and the wind(they're still here, but I'm telling the story here). The wind suggested a comp, to see which one of them is stronger.
He pointed at a man, who was wearing a coat and said: "Whoever makes that man to take off the coat, wins, lolk?" The sun accepted the challenge. Wind started blowing and blowing, bit the man held his coat tight, because it was cold. Then the sun started shining. The man tought, that it's too warm for wearing a coat and took it off.

I don't think it's neccesary to say, what was the lesson.

b) Junior Members:
Well, I think Lgolos said lots of important things in his thread called somehow like that: "How Not To Phail At Internet."

But I'll say something anyway ....
As you come to the SPP, read the rules first. Noone is too hardcore to read the rules. Then you'll know what's not allowed.

Then tell me, how do you usually separate a newbie from a "leet" member? Capitalising and spelling.
If you DO know, how to spell .... knock yourself out and use long words, that will make you look educated. Before you post your reply, read trough the whole post. Do you understand, what are you trying to say in your reply?

If you DON'T know how to spell ....
One choice is to get better in school at English ... or you can add smarterchild@hotmail.com to your contacts. Just ask him:" spell mammals."
He'll show it to you, if you have spelt it correctly and ask you, if you want to see the definition(command:define). Pretty useful. I have also used it for a couple of times.

THE END

First thing I would have to say:
Dont use terms like leet, l33t or some stupid internet term. I mean comon, you say that out in the real world without the use of internet?

Internet = diversity, everyone cant get along, we are not living puppets like those bible freaks. We all have our own personality and way of thinking.

The only way to get along is to understand someone, not by reading any manual how to get along.

Sure reading/writing and all properly would make this thread more smooth running, but then agian not everyone is raised with english as their native language.

Nobody, could you please be quiet and show some respect?
Thank you.

Though I do think that a Tut on socialism is a bit , I'll put aside my "Socially-challenged-retards-can-stay-the-hell-away-from-me-cos-they've-never-even-seen-another-member-of-the-opisite-sex" Internet stereotype and appriciate that Mantha has made a Tut convincing people to be better to their fellow man (Something I oh-so support).

Good job.

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all."

But YOU. You are truly the biggest asshole of us all. Not only that you're rude, you're also dumb. I mean ... I don't hate you ... you're just stupid.

-_- You cant make a tut and expect people to follow it. The design of the tut is good, but honestly you think it will change others... No
The person needs to change themself and cant be told when and where/how things should be done. I doubt this would change much from noobs.

feh, it should work, but noone will follow the rules all the time.
its just basic human nature.
I'll do my best tho.
thanks for the time and concern for the rest of us, Mantha.

Three problems.

First and foremost, why do we have to get along? I love the internet so much more than real life for mostly one reason; in real life, what you do has a direct impact on your life. You'll face what you did wrong eventually. But on the internet, the most that can happen is getting flamed, or banned from the forum, neither of which effects you IRL dramatically. Online you don't have to put on a false face just to avoid a bad occurance. This almost completely filters out two-faces and liars, and people are honest with eachother for better or for worse (usually better, in my instances). So I don't see any reason to be nice for any other reason than to just be nice, especially when some idiot did something that deserves getting yelled at.

Second, your comment, "we were all n00bs once". True. But back then, we deserved whatever we got too. And I'm referring to the time when we were completely new and oblivious to internet rules and customs, including grammar. Not when we were "newbs" in the forum, but newbs to the internet in general. Basically, we deserved what we got back then, the newbs of this generation deserve what they get now.

Third, your comment about telling people to use good grammar. To do it politely, and kindly. I never had that experience. My first time typing perfectly was in a chat room, in SpinChat. A member named "Hydrocronics", who was very well respected for being one of the most intelligent people on the chatroom (he was a metaphysicist), commented on my grammar pretty harshly. From that day on I've typed the same way I type now, and that was around 6 or 7 years ago.

Overall, yeah, some people are overly rude for no reason, but that doesn't mean we have to be nice just for the sake of being nice.

I never expected anyone to actually follow this. Those were just a couple of advices how to avoid the most stupid quarrels. Internet isn'a a happy land where everyone is nice and I can see that.

He edited the location.

Now if you don't have anything to post, that COULD be on-topic, PM The Scarecrow. He's cool, but you don't have to chat about it in my tut.

I'm ashamed of this thread. I come here and preach about coorect behaviour.
With that I took your dignity and the choice, how will you act. Sorry, I wish someone could just erase this shiz.

Being new to the internet is like being a freshman.

Everyone is going to attack you relentlessly, but it's all part of internet life. After you come out of it alive, it's all good. Nothing on the internet should affect you emotionally in real life, unless you're like doys. But don't be like doys.

So yeah, what Exilement said. Still a good tutorial Mantha.

Mantha, your right about the not knowing how people speak on stickpage.

See I thought on stickpage people would speak "Liek tis", I was wrong and I was called a noob, not knowing what I did wrong, so finally Stuffeh showed me what I did wrong.

I guess I'm not hated on these forums, but not a lot of people like me.

Nice tut.

So yeah, what Exilement said. Still a good tutorial Mantha.

Yeah, I just want to clear this up, this wasn't a bad tutorial at all. I just don't agree with the topic matter.

Basically what my essay of a post was trying to get across was that there's absolutely no reason to be nice on the internet for any reason other than to just be nice. That's all well and good IRL, but this is obviously not RL. If someone acts like a retard, the great thing about the internet is the fact that you can speak your mind, whether it's speaking calmly or yelling racial slurs and vulgarity at anyone who crosses their path. It doesn't matter, because you may get a good reputation as a kind, gentle user, but in the end that doesn't help you in any way.

I don't agree with the matter myself. This thread is completely stupid and retarded.

I never had any bad experiences as a newbie, I've always tried to spell as good as I can, even though I'm not a native-speaker. Don't say that's just because I'm not male. Some members even tought I'm a guy.

I was just trying to show, how it COULD be or even how it should be.
I don't think anyone likes flame-wars, if coming to an animation site, to get comments about his/her anims.

I don't follow this "tut". If I see a newb, flaming me or someone else, I wouldn't low down on his level, that's all.

I might delete this shiz tomorrow.

an honorable attempt I might add

indeed they do, however I do enjoy a flame war once in a great while. i think everybody needs to vent frustration
