View Full Version : How to win at the internet - Part 1.

I know you all want to know, so I'll share a bit with you.
More will come later.
Part 1: Presentability.
Always use correct capitalization, grammar, tense, and apostraphes. A little bit of intelligence goes a long way. If you're that hopelessly illiterate that you can't spell, look words you do not know up online. If you type like shit, you will be looked down upon about 98.3 per cent of the time.
Don't be excessively vulgar. Cursing in every sentance is not necessary to convey your point. On the flip side, don't let that hold you back from saying what you want. Speak freely, but don't overdo it.
This may seem obvious, but don't pick fights with undeserving people. More likely than not, the public will be on their side, and you're ****ed.
Don't go along with what others say. I'm not saying to be antisocial and disagreeable, but think for yourself; your posts should reflect your own opinions (or mine), not the person above you (unless it's me). However, don't argue for the sake of disagreeing. It isn't appreciated.
Maintain a high opinion of yourself. Your status on a forum is what you make it; if you bash yourself, others will act the same towards you. No one likes a internet emo.
When writing long replies, make some sort of structure to them. Address individual parts of the post you're replying to. People will agree with you no matter how stupid your point is.
Your caption below your avatar: Don't make it anything immature or stupid. People see it every time you post, and it will affect their opinion of you. Feel free to be creative, though.
Don't have a very large, pointless signature. Don't include quotes that are out of context. Don't have more than a couple of images in there.
Part 2: Debating
When debating, as always, pay close attention to spelling and grammar. If your post is unreadable, not even Noone will care about your opinion.
If your opponent made a post that you do not/can not reply to fully, quote a part of it that you can reply to, and answer to that.
Don't be racist or prejudicial to your opponent. EVER. You will come on as a stupid person who's opinion is not worth reading.
That said, be aggressive. You win a debate if you back up your opinion and disprove your opponent's [opinion].
Believe what you're arguing for. It is easiest to debate when you actually think your view is correct. Again, don't argue for the sake of arguing.
Don't forget to put down your opponent's view. Back up your attacks, and make him feel stupid.
Know when to stop. Don't keep posting far after the debate has died. Even if you won, people will not appreciate it.

Don't start a sentence with the word, "Am".
A comma was not needed in that sentence. "Finnerwoo" is not a word.

I don’t think grammar matters as long as it is understandable and when someone does moan about my grammar I just think of them as being a bit sad and wonder how often they got beaten up at school
I am too easily offended though and get drawn into flame offs so i do fail but i now post seriously here and retaliate on sp
I did go to debate club believe it or not. I think the main thing it teaches is don’t shout and save the punch up for afterward.

You'd think so, but it's actually not all that common. We have so many young people and members who speak(or type) English as a second language that it's not very reasonable to demand such things as good grammar and correct spelling. There are many people that just type internet lingo and 1337, ye are fully capable of great grammar, spelling and post structure, but they choose not to.
THEY are the people this is directed at, in my opinion.
Those people and flamers(not homosexuals), actually....

And like I said before and lgolos just told HBZ, common sense isn't all that common and sometimes it is necessary to make sure people understand how to act properly, which this thread does very well.
By the way, when is Part 2 coming out? Or is that a joke?
